Exhibit: Stars and Stripes over the Rhine – The American Occupation in Germany after World War I

The presence of American troops in the Rhineland after WWI had significant cultural, political, and economic effects on the area. Considerable regions of Germany remained under American control until 1923, and everyday interactions between the troops and the residents laid the groundwork for future friendship between former military enemies.
This travelling exhibit, produced by the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at Mainz University, is presented by the Atlantic Academy Rhinland-Palatinate in celebration of the sister-city relationship between Kaiserslautern and Columbia and the sister-state relationship between Rhineland-Palatinate and South Carolina.
