Lecture by Dr. Thomas Lekan: "The Serengeti Shall not Die" by with Thomas Lekan

Professor Lekan, Board Member of the German Studies Association, tells the story of Germany’s most famous 20th-century conservationist, Bernhard Grzimek. Grzimek and his son Michael took to the skies in a zebra-striped airplane in 1957 to survey Serengeti National Park in colonial East Africa, presenting it to the world in their Oscar-winning documentary film Serengeti Shall Not Die. The breathtaking view from the air allowed audiences to experience the planet’s last great animal migrations as a living whole—but without the perspective of
ordinary farmers and shepherds on the ground who lived among the animals and hoped to regain control over these lands after independence from Great Britain.
