InsightDeutschland Town Halls implemented by the American Council on Germany in nine communities across the United States aims at engaging its audiences in a conversation and a genuine exchange of ideas about the transatlantic relationship, highlighting the deep political, economic, and social ties and common challenges that impact the citizens of both countries globally and locally. Each town hall weekend consists of various interactive sessions — storytelling, TEDx-like presentations, panel discussions, debates, talk show-style interviews, workshops, and cultural activities – spread out over one and half days.
This event featurs a film screening of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) a comedy by German film maker Wolfgang Becker that is set in 1989 Berlin – the year of the revoloution. The movie tells the story of a mother loyal to the old regime who falls into a coma right before the fall of the Berlin Wall. When she wakes up her son tries to conceal from her the course of history in an attempt to protect her from a fatal shock. The screening is followed by a discussion about the 30th anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall.
