Goethe Pop Up Seattle with "...And the Winners Are...": Film Screening "Gundermann"

Goethe Pop Up Seattle presents Gundermann as part of the German film festival “…and the winners are…”. Gerhard Gundermann (1955–1998) was a heavy equipment operator at a coal mine and a Stasi informer, but above all he was a gifted singer-songwriter with a fan base in both the former GDR and later in reunified Germany. In his feature film Gundermann, Andreas Dresen takes a sensitive look at this contradictory personality. The result is a perceptive biographical narrative that unreels like a contemporary musical Heimatfilm for East (and all of) Germany. Dresen’s biopic Gundermann was the big winner at this year’s German Film Awards, taking home six Lolas at the weekend’s gala in Berlin after receiving a record 10 nominations. The screening is followed by a Q&A with Andreas Dresen and an opening night party at SIFF Film Center. This event is part of the Film Festival “…and the winners are…” – a joint project by the Goethe-Institut and the German Film Academy. In Seattle, the series takes place in the frame of the Year of German-American Friendship and is co-organized by the Goethe Pop Up Seattle with local partners NWFF and SIFF.
