Pop Up Kino is a monthly film series celebrating German cinema from the East to the West and from the Weimar period to the Contemporary. Throughout the year a curated selection of films will be screened at MATCH and introduced by a special guest presenter.
The series continues in February with another classic of New German Cinema: Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. A lonely widow, Emmi meets the much younger Arab worker Ali in a bar. They fall in love, and everyone and everything begins to turn against them. Fassbinder’s masterful homage to Douglas Sirk’s All that Heaven Allows expertly and emotionally exposes the racial tensions underlying contemporary German culture.
The film is introduced by University of Houston Professor Dr. Sandra Frieden.
