Stray Cat Film Center and Goethe Pop Up Kansas City invite you to What’s left? Films from former East Germany, a series of film screenings curated by Dr. Larson Powell, Professor of Film Studies at University of Missouri–Kansas City.
This week the Goethe Pop Up welcomes all for a screening of Herzsprung by Helke Misselwitz (1992). The movie is set in the little town of Herzsprung where almost nothing has changed since German unification – except a rise in unemployment. Johanna, a young mother and widow, becomes one of the unemployed and lives on welfare. Only the stranger Manuel seems to be able to comfort her. However, the people in the village strongly refuse him and threaten to destroy Johanna’s last hope and love.
The film is shown in German with English subtitles.
