The Nazi regime forbade the Jewish artist Fritz Ascher to paint, so he resorted to pen and paper – the Gray Art Gallery in cooperation with the Fritz Ascher Society shows pictures and poems by the expressionist persecuted by the National Socialists (1893-1970).
As part of the program flanking the exhibition, high school students nationwide were invited to respond to the life or work of Fritz Ascher with an essay, a poem or an artwork. The winners of the competition are invited to the award ceremony at the German Academy New York, during which the winning works are exhibited and celebrated.
